Distinguished and Famous people from Albury Wodonga
The two border cities have distinct claims on sporting and creative lives. Albury is the birthplace of Lauren Jackson and Richard Roxburgh; Wodonga is the birthplace of footballer Josh Kennedy.
🏅 Lauren Jackson
Lauren Jackson's basketball story began in Albury, where she attended Murray High School. She became an Opals player as a teenager before a career with Seattle in the WNBA and Australian teams at successive Olympic Games. Her honours include three WNBA Most Valuable Player awards and Australia's 2006 world championship. Later, she played for the Albury Wodonga Bandits at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre, an unusually direct homecoming to a venue bearing her own name.
⚽ Josh Kennedy
Wodonga-born striker Josh Kennedy built a club career in Germany and Japan before returning to Victoria with Melbourne City. At Nagoya Grampus he helped win a league championship and twice claimed the J-League Golden Boot. Australian supporters particularly remember the goal that secured the Socceroos' qualification for the 2014 World Cup. His birthplace belongs to Wodonga, while the professional story spans the Bundesliga, Japanese football and Australia's national team.
🎭 Richard Roxburgh
Actor Richard Roxburgh was born in Albury before higher education and drama training took him to Canberra and Sydney. His work includes Blue Murder, Doing Time for Patsy Cline and Moulin Rouge!, with a move behind the camera to direct Romulus, My Father. The roles range from Australian drama to international spectacle, giving his career a considerably larger geographical footprint than its border-city beginning.
